According to Boyce, on the [south wall]? beneath the stairs was a lararium painting:
A single serpent about to devour the offerings – an egg and a pinecone – on a burning altar.

According to Eschebach, the stairs to the upper floor would have been against this south wall.
Where the modern gate has been fitted, there may be a mark showing the steps leading up the wall.
